ABUELA
Words by Inês Alvez | Collage by Sabrina Sims
In my grandmother's arms
The dreams of a nation are carried
In my grandmother’s arms
The world could be made
She nourished a whole family like the sun feeds the moon
All of her light, her blood, her soul
Same as water
All around her
Grows
Then lived the life of a mother
With joy but with sadness too
Lighting up children
Creating homes
“When you’re born,” she says, looking at me
“The stars were even brighter”
While I hugged her, kissing goodbye
“Te amo tanto, minha querida”
Her eyes shining like gold
Was the last time I saw my grandmother
A year collecting all the things I have to tell her
Hoping for the day I will hold her again
